Rockies Make Three Roster Moves as Injuries Begin to Mount

Colorado is calling up a trade deadline acquisition.

The Colorado Rockies are in the middle of a three-city road trip and began the second stop against the Arizona Diamondbacks on Monday night with a 9-0 loss. Before the game, the team announced some roster moves, which include bringing up a newly acquired infielder at the trade deadline.

Colorado placed infiedler/outfielder Tyler Freeman on the 10-day injured list, retroactive to Aug. 9, with lumbar pain and they are calling up infielder Connor Norby from Triple-A Albuquerque, a week after he was acquired from the Miami Marlins. Freeman was the DH in Saturday night's 8-6 win over the St. Louis Cardinals and exited the game after two at-bats with an injury. He'll now miss at least 10 days for the Rockies.

Norby is someone who Colorado hopes could benefit from a change of scenery. In 65 games for the Marlins this season, Norby slashed .205/.313/.325 with four home runs and just 16 RBIs. That is one year after he slashed .251/.300/.389 with eight home runs and 34 runs driven in for Miami in just 88 games in 2025.

In three overall seasons in South Florida, the right-handed hitter slashed .236/.302/.383 for the Marlins with 19 home runs and 67 RBIs. The 26-year-old was drafted in the second round of the 2021 MLB Draft by the Baltimore Orioles. He had shown glimpses of power early in his career and Colorado trading for him is a low-risk, high-reward move if he finds his swing at Coors Field in Denver.

The Rockies acquired Norby and minor-league pitcher Aiden May at the trade deadline on Aug. 3 for pitcher Victor Vodnik, who was a promising young arm for Colorado. The move was one for Miami, where they unloaded some of their infield depth and a young pitcher to acquire some needed bullpen help down the stretch of the regular season as they try to hang around the National League wild-card race.

As for Norby, this is the second time in three years he has been traded. At the trade deadline in 2024, he was sent to Miami along with outfielder Kyle Stowers from the Orioles for pitcher Trevor Rogers. With Freeman going down with an injury and the time he'll be out unknown, Norby will get a chance to play in the infield and possibly get some at-bats as the DH going forward for manager Warren Schaeffer.

Colorado is hoping to have Norby turn around his season and make an impact for a team that is looking to avoid losing 100 games for the fourth straight season.

In another move on Tuesday, the Rockies are calling up prospect Zac Veen, their first-round pick in the 2020 Draft, according to Kyle Newman of the Denver Post. The corresponding move reportedly is that Edouard Julien will be designated for assignment. The 24-year-old Veen is a power-hitting outfielder who has 24 home runs and 87 runs driven in for Albuquerque.
