Don’t Overreact to the Detroit Tigers’ 2-4 Start—Here’s Why

This 2-4 start has no reason to worry Detroit Tigers fans, and there is a couple of reasons why.

In this story:

The Detroit Tigers started their 2026 season on the right foot by defeating the San Diego Padres in two of the three games, and brought a 2-1 record into Arizona to take on the Diamondbacks. The Diamonbacks swept Detroit right out of Chase Field and sent them back to Comerica Park for their home opener.

The start isn't what the Tigers had hoped for, especially with all the hype surrounding them this season, but as they host the St. Louis Cardinals starting Friday afternoon, there should still be optimism as the season rolls into its first ten games of the year.

Here are the main reasons why there should be zero panic for the Tigers' 2-4 start.

1. They Brought the Same Record Home to Begin Homestand in 2025

2025 wasn't that long ago, and that was the Tigers' best season in quite some time, before blowing the AL Central lead to the Cleveland Guardians.

Regardless, Detroit started its 2025 season getting swept by the 2024 World Series champion Los Angeles Dodgers, and then took two of three against the Seattle Mariners, bringing a 2-4 record into the home opener against the Chicago White Sox.

The Tigers would then go on to sweep the White Sox and take two of three against the New York Yankees on their first home stand of the season, which brought them to a 7-5 record. Surely the 2026 offense has been quiet, but when playing in front of the home faithful, it comes alive.

Remember, it didn't take the 2025 Tigers long to be deemed the best team in Major League Baseball with the success they had on the field. If starting 2026 the same way they began 2025 has any indication on how things will go, Detroit is still in very good hands.

2. Beatable Opponents Coming Up on the Schedule

The Cardinals are coming into town and when looking at their roster, it isn't the same Cardinals team that has given the Tigers fits over the years. In a rebuilding state, the Tigers should pounce on the St. Louis pitching and command the opening series.

Following their three-game stint with the Cardinals, Detroit will travel to take on the Minnesota Twins, who could very well finish last in the AL Central division. The Tigers played the Twins well last season, winning eight games across 13 games played.

The Twins aren't the same team they were a handful of seasons ago, and will be the first taste of divisional matchups for the Tigers, which they should take full advantage of.
