Tigers Boss Compares Kevin McGonigle to Intense MLB Superstar Trio

In this story:
As much as the Detroit Tigers liked how Kevin McGonigle played during spring training, one never knows how rookies we'll begin their first Major League season.
Well, it's safe to say that McGonigle started his with a bang. After slamming four hits in his MLB debut on opening day, he's become a vital cog in Detroit’s offense in the first week of his career.
He's impressed his teammates, his coaches and Tigers fans alike with a mature approach at the plate and in the field. His quick transition to third base has helped solidify a position that has bedeviled the Tigers for the past few years, giving them a consistent slugger and defender who could man that position for years to come.
His manager, A.J. Hinch, joined MLB Network Radio on Tuesday and compared his young star to three current and former Major League players that will probably make Tigers fans quite happy.

McGonigle was born in Aldan, Penn., and grew a Phillies fan. That’s where Hinch started his comparison. As he continued, he talked about McGonigle’s work ethic and the foundation that he believes will make him a great player.
“He’s Philly through and through,” Hinch said. “You know his favorite players are intense-type players [like] Chase Utley and obviously everybody compares him to [Alex] Bregman and [Dustin] Pedroia, these very strong-minded players. You can see that in his game. I think if he feels prepared, he feels good. I love that about him because he's the type who has a purpose behind everything that he's done. He’s very intentional with his prep, he's very intentional with his game awareness and I love that. He’s all in on the competition. We saw that come out in the [Freddy] Peralta at-bat in San Diego, we saw it come out last night [Monday]. He wasn't trying to do too much, things like that. I notice him being in control of his actions on the field. I think that's a great foundation for him. Riding the emotional roller coaster is one thing. But he really doesn't change his demeanor the entire day and that’s a strength.”
His numbers at the plate have been impressive. In five games he’s slashed .375/.474/.500 with six hits, five RBI, three walks and three strikeouts. He’s a big part of the reason why the Tigers are off to a solid start to the season. His play has made the debate about whether he should make the team or not a bit absurd in retrospect.
