2008 New York Marathon

Marilson Gomes dos Santos of Brazil won his second New York City Marathon with a time of 2:08:43. Abderrahim Goumri was the runner-up for a second-straight year.

Paula Radcliffe took the lead during the first mile Sunday and cruised to victory in 2:15:25. The win comes less than three months after her disappointing 23rd place finish at the Beijing Games.

Brazil's Marilson Gomes dos Santos let Abderrahim Goumri of Morocco set the pace for most of Sunday's marathon, before passing him with less than a mile to run. It was Santos' second win in New York.

At age 34, Britain's Paula Radcliffe won her third New York City Marathon, finishing almost two minutes ahead of her next closest competitor.

The race begins on Staten Island and quickly hits Brooklyn. From there, the course winds into Manhattan, through the Bronx, and back into Manhattan, where it finishes in Central Park.

The largest marathon in the world, the New York City Marathon races through each of the city's five boroughs.

As racers cross the finish line, they are given a medal, a blanket and food and drink. The first official New York City Marathon was run in 1970 by 127 competitors.

Kurt Fearnley of Australia celebrates his third consecutive win in New York, finishing the course in 1:44:51. "I love this city and I love this race, that's three in a row now, I'd like to make it a few more," he said afterward.

37,899 men and women completed the New York City Marathon on Sunday. It was run in chilly, windy conditions. Each year nearly two million spectators line the marathon's course as it snakes through the city's five boroughs.

Kurt Fearnley of Australia and Edith Hunkeler of Switzerland won the men's and women's wheelchair races. Fearnley became the first wheelchair racer to claim three consecutive New York City Marathon wins.

An official wheelchair and handcycle division was introduced into the race in 2000.
