Three players from rugby club Clermont Auvergne were attacked by a gang in southern France who used machetes on the players, The Guardian reports. Clermont said the weapons also included knives and swords.

According to a club statement, Aurélien Rougerie, Julien Pierre and Benjamin Kayser suffered non-life threatening injuries in the attack, which occurred early Sunday morning. Pierre will have surgery on "deep cuts" to his hip, and Rougerie and Kayser suffered arm injuries.

Police said the players were walking back to their hotel after being at a nightclub and were attacked "for no apparent reason." No one was detained at the scene.

From a statement by Clermont

“We are deeply shocked and outraged by these acts and will bring all the necessary support to local authorities who have launched a probe."
