In her second attempt to swim across the English Channel, Gertrude Ederle began at 7:08 a.m. at Cape Gris-Nez in France. When she emerged on the English coast 14 hours and 31 minutes later, she not only became the first woman ever to swim the Channel, she beat the previous record, man or woman, by two hours.
