James said in 2009 that he would no longer wear the number out of respect for Jordan. He also said he thought the NBA should retire the number league-wide.

"I feel like no NBA player should wear 23. Nobody," James said, according to the Associated Press. "If I'm not going to wear No. 23, then nobody else should be able to wear it."

Two weeks ago, James asked his Instagram followers which number he should wear, and announced his decision to switch back to No. 23 in another Instagram post Sunday.

"23 it is!" he wrote. "It's only right I go back. 2·3=6 We still family 6."
