Charlotte Hornets forward Michael Kidd-Gilchrist underwent shoulder surgery for a torn labrum and will be out for six months, the team announced Tuesday.

Kidd-Gilchrist left Charlotte’s preseason game Saturday against the Orlando Magic with a dislocated right shoulder. He was taken to the hospital after exiting the game, and the Hornets said his X-rays came back negative.

Kidd-Gilchrist signed a four-year, $52 million extension with Charlotte in August. The former No. 2 pick played in 55 games last season, averaging a career-high 10.9 points per game.

The Hornets open their regular season on Oct. 28 against the Miami Heat.
