DeAndre Ayton Left Arena Before Speaking to Media After Late Benching
The Suns got a much-needed victory over the Nuggets, outlasting Denver 121–114 to cut the series deficit to 2–1. However, one key Suns member did not contribute muich to the win, leading to a benching down the stretch.
Center DeAndre Ayton played just 26 minutes on the night, totaling four points and nine rebounds. With five minutes left in the game, coach Monty Williams opted to sit Ayton in favor of backup center Jock Landale, who produced six points and seven rebounds in his 22 minutes.
During a timeout, point guard Chris Paul was caught on camera trying to cheer up Ayton, but Ayton seemed to ignore the veteran as he processed getting benched.
Then, after the game, Ayton left the locker room before the media had a chance to ask him about his performance and feelings on Williams’s decision, according to ESPN’s Tim MacMahon.
Still, Williams chalked this up to a bad performance for Ayton, crediting Landale to help be there to stand in for him this time.
“Guys have tough games, and DA didn't have his best tonight, but it’s great to be able to have your brother pick it up for you,” Williams said, via Gerald Bourguet.
Ayton, who averaged 18 points and 10 rebounds this season, has had a tumultuous relationship with the team and Williams. After looking for a max contract, he was the subject of heavy trade rumors, and eventually signed a four-year, $133 million offer sheet with the Pacers, a deal that the Suns ultimately matched.
