NBA Considering Making Flops a Technical Foul, per Report

Flopping in the NBA has become an epidemic, and the league has decided that something needs to change.

According to a report from Shams Charania of The Athletic, the NBA’s competition committee is discussing the potential of an in-game penalty for flops that would result in a technical foul free throw. Discussions are underway that could lead to a trial run of the rule during NBA Summer League in July.

As time has gone on, more and more players across the league have tried to sell fouls to the officiating, as defenders across the NBA have attempted to draw offensive fouls. The embellishment of contact, sometimes to the point of flopping where there has been no contact at all, has frequently resulted in poor foul calls on bang-bang plays by officials. Historically, there has not been a penalty for flopping, and only recently have foul calls become reviewable plays for teams across the league.

Now the league appears willing to take the penalty for flopping a step further, and time will tell whether or not the technical foul rule will be a permanent one.
