‘Very Real’ Chance Warriors’ Klay Thompson Becomes Free Agent, per Report

The Warriors have kept a big three of Stephen CurryKlay Thompson and Draymond Green together for a decade. But for Thompson, as the 2023-24 NBA season approaches, the current state of his contract has led to a “very real possibility” that he could enter the next offseason as a free agent, according to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski.

While speaking on ESPN’s NBA Countdown, Wojnarowski offered insight into the current state of Thompson’s contract negotiations with Golden State and just how far apart the two sides are.

“I’m told that there has been absolutely no progress on a Klay Thompson extension in Golden State. They are both still apart on years and money, and there’s a very real possibility that Klay Thompson goes into free agency next summer without a deal,” Wojnarowski explained Sunday.

Golden State Warriors guard Klay Thompson is reportedly not close to coming to terms on a new contract extension.

“And I think that’s where things get complicated for Golden State and becomes a little something of a high-wire act. Especially if Klay Thompson duplicates this year the kind of season he had last year—41% three-point shooting, led the league with 301 threes, and his best points per game at almost 22 points per game, in several years.”

Wojnarowski went onto explain that this was the first “real test” the Warriors will face, in terms of keeping together their trio of Curry, Thompson and Green.
