76ers News: Patrick Beverley Giving Tyrese Maxey Much-Needed Tough Love

In this story:
Aside from what he brings on the defensive end, Philadelphia 76ers guard Patrick Beverley has hung around in the league because of his leadership abilities. The veteran recently opened up on some tough love he had to give to the team's emerging star.
On Christmas Day, the Sixers found themselves without Joel Embiid in a matchup against the Miami Heat. Tyrese Maxey was called upon to lead the charge but ended up having one of his worst games of the season. He finished with just 12 points after shooting 4-for-20 from the field.
During a recent podcast appearance, Maxey touched on what Beverley said to him after that game. While some were chalking up the performance to an off night, Beverley explained they need more from him on nights with Embiid out. The discussion was later brought up on his podcast, where he shared his thought process in that moment.
"I don't play about my young guys, I want them to get everything they deserve in life," Beverley said. "I ain't here for a check, I'm here for your legacy only."

It might have been a tough conversation at the time, but Beverley managed to light a fire under Maxey. A few nights later, he erupted for 42 points in a win over the Houston Rockets.
Since Christmas, Maxey continues to prove he can elevate his game when Embiid is out of action. In the Sixers' recent overtime thriller with the Atlanta Hawks, he finished with 35 points, eight rebounds, nine assists, and four steals.
Instances like this are where Beverley shows how valuable he is to a team dynamic. He had no problem being the villain of the group, and it resulted in getting the most out of Maxey.
