Trent is the Bucks' last remaining key free agent. They have already signed Taurean Prince, Kevin Porter Jr., and Bobby Portis to new deals, keeping a good part of the veteran contingent.
Trent averaged 11.1 points, 2.3 rebounds, and 1.2 assists over the past season in Milwaukee. He shot 41.6% from 3-point range and had a 56.8% effective field goal rate.
The Bucks are doing these deals amid the lingering rumors about superstar Giannis Antetokounmpo.
The Greek Freak is reportedly mulling his future with the organization after a run of early playoff exits.
Reports from the offseason say a meeting took place between the player and the front office about his future, though it is unclear what was discussed.
Realistically, the Bucks aren't fighting for a title in the upcoming season since Damian Lillard is out. The roster — even when healthy — still lacks quality role players in the frontcourt and perimeter.
The team needs more offensive creators and switchable defenders, but lacks the necessary assets to get those players.
Given the lack of draft capital and cap space, the Bucks are good enough to make the playoffs because they have a top-three player in the league.
In response to the constant disappointment, Charania reported that Antetokounmpo is monitoring what moves the Bucks make.
It is not clear what impact these signings have on Antetokounmpo's ambitions to contend for titles, but given that the team has limited assets, its best move was to keep its veterans around.
Trent offers floor spacing and defense for Antetokounmpo — two pivotal traits for any player who lines up next to the Bucks' franchise player.
Keeping the six-foot, five-inch guard isn't changing the trajectory of the team, but Antetokounmpo should have another shooter to kick the ball out to.
