Coby White surpasses his career-high in points scored at the very location where he first set this record
After a tepid end to February, Chicago Bulls guard Coby White has been heating up in March. And on Monday night, he reached a new career-high in points scored. White put up an impressive 37 points in the Bulls’ 113-109 win over the Sacramento Kings, surpassing his previous career high of 36 points, which he set at the Golden 1 Center in January 2021.
Let the game come to him
Rather than press and force shots up to get into a rhythm, the former Tar Heer bided his time and looked to teammates like Ayo Dosunmu, who got going early.
“I was just trying to let the game come to me. Ayo (Dosunmu) really had it going in that first quarter. He was really aggressive getting downhill, catch-and-shoot. So I was just trying to play off him, let him do his thing,” White said.
However, White began hitting his stride in the second quarter and showed off his shifty handles and sublime hops on one play where he lost fellow Tar Heel Harrison Barnes and emphatically dunked the ball despite the latter’s contest.
“When my opportunities came, I wanted to take advantage of it. I wasn't trying to force anything,” White continued.
Came up big in the fourth
White then finished off what his teammate DeMar DeRozan began in the fourth, giving the Bulls the lead with a tough layup with under a minute left in the tense match.
Despite his heroics, White refused to take all the credit and spread the love amongst his teammates for their efforts in the fantastic come-from-behind win.
“So I don't really look at it as, 'Oh, man, me and Deebo are doing this and that.' I look at it as we got a good, solid team win. And I'm proud of our team,” White said.
“It was a team effort. Ayo (Dosunmu) played really big. AC (Alex Caruso) had four steals. Julian (Phillips) came in, gave us some big minutes, had a big-time charge, got to the free-throw line after a big-time cut that got us a layup. Vooch (Nikola Vucevic) with a tip late that got AC an offensive rebound. Drum (Andre Drummond), the way he was screening was unbelievable, getting all the guards downhill. JC (Jevon Carter) too.”
