The Chicago Bulls’ superb stretch in December, wherein they won 10 of 15 games, has masked plenty of the issues plaguing this team. And while they’re playing much better, it’s clear that there are still changes to be made before they can truly become a contender in the Eastern Conference.

According to a recent report, the Bulls must make some significant moves at this year’s trade deadline on February 8 or risk staying in the NBA’s purgatory.

Just not clicking

The “Big 3” of Zach LaVine, DeMar DeRozan, and Nikola Vucevic have had stellar individual performances the past few seasons, but playing together hasn’t clicked for them.

“With their ‘Big 3’ of LaVine, DeRozan, and Vucevic on the court, Chicago is still being outscored by a whopping 17.5 points per 100 possessions with a healthy enough sample size (795 possessions) to show that this simply isn't going to work, no matter what trades the Bulls may explore between now and the deadline,” Greg Swartz of Bleacher Report wrote.

Veteran assets

The Bulls have plenty of veteran players who most contenders would love to have on their squad. This allows Chicago to make moves and gain assets for the future.

“This is actually a roster that contains a lot of veteran talent, players that could be plugged in elsewhere and make major contributions towards a title chase. DeMar DeRozan and Zach LaVine headline this list, although the Bulls shouldn't stop there. Nikola Vucevic, Alex Caruso, Andre Drummond, Jevon Carter, and others can all start or be high-minute members of a playoff rotation, depending on the needs of the given team,” Swartz continued.

“If Chicago does it right, this should be one of the biggest gut jobs we've ever seen at a trade deadline.”

A division rival in the East is highly coveting Alex Caruso
