NBA Insider Doesn't Believe Donovan Mitchell Will Sign Extension With Cleveland Cavaliers

ESPN's Brian Windhorst does not think Donovan Mitchell will sign a contract extension with the Cleveland Cavaliers next summer.

The 2023-24 season isn't even underway and Cleveland Cavaliers fans are already having to deal with dialogue surrounding Donovan Mitchell's future with the organization.

It was awkward to see Mitchell openly admiring New York and Madison Square Garden while also being photographed playing golf with a front office member after his team was eliminated by them in the playoffs. This quickly turned into trade rumors and reports that Spida would eventually find his way to the Knicks.

Now, ESPN's Brian Windhort is reporting that Mitchell is not expected to sign an extension in the summer of 2024.

Is it surprising that Mitchell doesn't want to extend his contract with the Cavs? Not really. Does it mean he will definitely leave Cleveland like other stars have done in the past? No.

Windhorst did say that he doesn't believe Mitchell not signing long-term will cause an alarm to go off for the Cavs. This situation all has to do with money, what a supermax contract could look like, while of course allowing Donovan to keep his options open.

Clearly, all Mitchell wants to do is play winning basketball. It's what he talks about when he takes the podium before and after games and it's who he is as a player. The Cavs will be under a lot of pressure this season to show Mitchell he can do that in Cleveland.

At this point, we have to wait and see how Mitchell talks about his future with the Cavs. He will certainly be asked questions by Cleveland media when they have availability with the team starting on October 1.

Will he shoot down any rumblings of him moving on or will he decline to speak on the matter painting a bleaker cloud over the situation?
