It was announced by Shams Charania of The Athletic that veteran forward Rudy Gay had been waived by the Oklahoma City Thunder. Gay, a former star with the Memphis Grizzlies, spent the last two seasons with the Utah Jazz before being acquired by Atlanta Hawks in the John Collins trade earlier this offseason. Gay was then sent to Oklahoma City in a trade that included Patty Mills.

As previously mentioned, Gay was a borderline All-Star during his time with the Memphis Grizzlies. Posting multiple seasons above or right around 20 PPG, Gay was a high-level scorer during his prime, and is still averaging 15.8 PPG for his career.

While he is no longer the player he was even just a few years ago, Gay could draw some interest from different teams around the NBA. Veterans are always important for teams trying to make a deep playoff run, and a player like Gay could be a great locker room presence while also serving as a depth piece.

Set to turn 37 years old in August, Gay shouldn’t be relied upon for rotation minutes at this point in his career, but could still be a player certain teams take a look at. Gay wouldn’t cost anything above a veteran minimum deal, which would give him the opportunity to sign wherever is the best fit.
