Injury Report: Boston Celtics vs Atlanta Hawks

Today, the Atlanta Hawks released their injury report ahead of their matchup tomorrow night vs the Celtics.

Saddiq Bey (left knee torn ACL), Kobe Bufkin (left big toe sprain), AJ Griffin (right ankle sprain), Mouhamed Gueye (right UCL sprain), Jalen Johnson (right ankle sprain), Onyeka Okongwu (left big toe sprain), and Trae Young (left fifth finger torn ligament) are all out tomorrow vs Boston

Here was the last update that the Hawks gave on Young, the day it was revealed that he would have surgery:

“During Friday’s game vs. Toronto, guard Trae Young suffered a left hand injury. He underwent an MRI yesterday at the Emory Sports Medicine Complex, which revealed a tear of the radial collateral ligament (RCL) in the fifth finger of his left hand. He will undergo surgery to repair the RCL on Tuesday at the Hospital for Special Surgery (HSS) in New York and will be re-evaluated in four weeks.”

Since Young went down with an injury, the Hawks have gone 7-7 in their last 14 games and are 5.5 games ahead of the Brooklyn Nets for the last spot in the play-in tournament. The Hawks offense has suffered in most games with Young out.

This season, Young has averaged 26.4 PPG and 10.8 APG and was named an All-Star. This is the longest absence he has had in his NBA career, as he has been one of the most durable players in the NBA.

Atlanta is gearing up for the final stretch run of the season as the play-in tournament and the playoffs get closer. They have two matchups with the Boston Celtics and then a matchup with the Milwaukee Bucks just this week. Last night, they started with a great win over the Charlotte Hornets, their largest margin of victory this season.

With so many guys injured the Hawks have had to reach deep into their bench to try and find production and that has not always worked. De’Andre Hunter has done well off the bench, but he is back to a starting role now. The Hawks have not gotten much production from their bench, but that changed last night with big performances from Bruno Fernando and Garrison Matthews, who both had perhaps their best games as Hawks.

Fernando shot 11-14 and scored 25 points, a new career high, and Matthews shot 6-8 (4-6 from three) and scored 20 points. Atlanta’s offense has had to rely on Dejounte Murray to produce big games on offense, but they got great games from their supporting cast last night.
