Knicks' Champions Night Shirt Is Causing a Commotion Before 76ers Clash

In this story:
There are plenty of big storylines before the Knicks take on the 76ers Tuesday night. How do the starters look after a long and draining playoff run? Will Philadelphia's new reinforcements close the gap between these teams?
Yet, a new storyline emerged in the hours ahead of tip-off, and it concerns a t-shirt. No, I'm not joking.
Several reporters on hand for Opening Night posted pictures of the MSG seats covered with merch New York is giving out to fans for the first game of the year. The shirt says 2026-27 Champions Night, and that phrase has generated quite the reaction due to its potential accuracy/inaccuracy.

Is Knicks' 2026-27 Champions Night shirt a typo?
One camp thinks the shirt is perfectly fine. It is, in fact, Champions Night, since this is when the reigning title holders celebrate their feat by hanging the championship banner and receiving rings to commemorate the accomplishment. It also takes place at the start of the 2026-27 season, so tying it to this campaign makes sense.
However, other—mainly outside — voices see this as an error. The Knicks won the title for the 2025-26 season, not 2026-27 (at least, potentially, not yet), so some have viewed this as a typo, or even the team claiming it's already won the championship for the current season as well.
Now, both sides have an argument. New York certainly didn't make the meaning especially clear. Putting a date on the shirt like Oct. 20, 2026, instead of the 2026-27 season, might've erased any questions. Champions Night 2026 could have generated less hubbub.
In the grand scheme, it doesn't really matter unless the team admits it was an error and reissues them. Either way, fans who get their hands on this merch will cherish it, and those who aren't as lucky surely will pay a small fortune to buy one on the aftermarket.
Yet, all of this speaks to how much conversation the Knicks stir, especially when they're good. New York's ability to repeat, its offseason departures, and Karl-Anthony Towns' extension drama have certainly generated plenty of talk this summer and up to Opening Night. But as if there isn't enough to dissect, now a T-shirt's meaning is of concern to more than a few.
In some ways, it'd be good if this shirt were the biggest topic of conversation coming out of Tuesday's game, because that'd mean the defending champs took care of business against the 76ers. If they fall to Philadelphia in concerning fashion, there'll be much bigger matters to address.
