Irving suffered the injury on Monday night against the Sacramento Kings. After suffering the injury, he got up on his own power, made two free throws, and was helped off the court.
The 32-year-old was also seen shedding a tear while at the free-throw line, possibly knowing the severity of the injury at the time.
Kings' DeMar DeRozan fouled Irving on a drive to the basket. His right foot then landed on the foot of the Kings' Jonas Valanciunas. He lost his balance and then landed awkwardly on his left leg, and his knee appeared to hyperextend before he fell to the floor.
Dončić and Irving have been teammates with the Dallas Mavericks for the past two-plus seasons. The two were the best players for Dallas during their time together and led the Mavericks to an NBA Finals appearance last season, their first since 2011.
Although the Mavericks lost to the Boston Celtics in five games, many fans will always remember the season.
The last time Dončić and Irving played together was on Christmas against the Minnesota Timberwolves. Dončić suffered a calf injury that kept him out for over a month.
No one would have thought that would have been the last time Dončić and Irving played together, let alone that Dončić would no longer be a Maverick.
The Mavericks traded away Dončić to the Lakers in a trade that no one saw coming. The 26-year-old was traded to L.A. on Feb. 1 in exchange for Anthony Davis, Max Christie, and a 2029 first-round draft pick.
The loss of Irving could put a wrench in the Mavericks' season. They currently sit as the No. 10 seed in the loaded Western Conference. While they are only 1.5 games back of the 6th seed, they are now without their All-Star point guard.
As for the Lakers, they have been one of the best teams in the league for the past month and a half. They currently sit as the No. 2 seed in the West and could be a lock to stay within the top five in the conference.
