In this story:

Oklahoma City’s season is nearing the end, but getting some extra high-level reps before the playoffs.

The Thunder have been clinging to the top seed in the West for the entire season, and with only a few games to go, they’re trying to inch closer to clinching a third-straight No. 1 seed. While the San Antonio Spurs are still tight behind them, the Thunder’s final stretch of the regular season will also be about getting some reps for the postseason, particularly on the defensive end.

Although the Thunder have had the league’s best defense for two straight years, the playoffs are still a different animal, largely due to the level of competition. With the Los Angeles Lakers coming into town on Thursday night, the Thunder will have a chance to face some of the top offensive players in the league.

With Oklahoma City set to spend the night trying to slow Luka Doncic, LeBron James and Austin Reaves, the Thunder’s top defenders will have their hands full. Although the Thunder have played some of the best offenses throughout the season, this matchup will allow for Jalen Williams, Chet Holmgren and others to build some more defensive chemistry, with the Thunder almost entirely healthy as the season winds down.

Since the All-Star break, the Lakers have the league’s fourth-best offensive rating at 120.1 and are 17-5 in that span. With Doncic surging into the MVP conversation in that stretch, he’s playing easily his best basketball since arriving in Los Angeles last season.

Of course, the Thunder have also been great during that stretch on the other end, ranking as the league’s best defense since the All-Star break. With a clash of defense vs. offense upcoming, this game could be a perfect playoff primer for both squads.

While Alex Caruso’s questionable status for the game could throw off some of Mark Daigneault’s preferred matchups, Cason Wallace and Lu Dort are sure to be instrumental in the Thunder’s efforts to slow Doncic, James and Reaves.

Of course, Doncic’s history with the Thunder always gives his trips to Oklahoma City some extra juice, so a playoff atmosphere should come along with the playoff-level hoops. Assuming the Thunder can hang onto the top seed, the Thunder and Lakers would be unlikely to meet until the conference finals in the postseason, given the Lakers’ hold on the No. 3 seed.

With one more regular season matchup in LA next week, these matchups could go a long way in each team’s prep for the postseason.
