Takeaways from Joe Lacob's TK Show Appearance Include Curry's Future, LeBron's Choice

On Wednesday, Warriors governor Joe Lacob had an extended interview with Tim Kawakami.

In the TK Show episode, Lacob addressed a variety of hot topics about the Warriors, including their perceived inactive offseason, how much they value the present with Stephen Curry and upcoming extension talks with Curry.

Lacob Claps Back at Perception Warriors Have Been Inactive

Lacob knows that the Warriors have not added any outside free agents or made any trades this offseason, but he explained that the players they re-signed were better than the players they could have gotten in free agency.

He specifically referenced De'Anthony Melton signing for the taxpayer mid-level exception and Kristaps Porzingis signing a two-year, $40 million deal.

My take: Lacob has a point about the Warriors' free-agency moves. I actually love the decision to re-sign Melton, who was very valuable last season and should be even better in 2026-27 as he's further away from his ACL injury.

Porzingis is a bigger risk, but the fact that they didn't have to use any MLE money to keep him made it obvious to me that they needed to extend him.

There was a scenario in which Melton and Porzingis chose different teams, and the Warriors ended up signing lesser players.

With all that said, the fact that the Warriors have missed out on a number of quality players who signed veteran minimum contracts is disappointing, and we'll get into their lack of trade activity in the next subhead.

Lacob Says He Values the Present with Curry, but He's Not Guaranteeing Anything

One critique I've had of Lacob's tenure over the last few years is the front office being overprotective of trading young players and picks for players who can help Curry now.

Some of that criticism isn't all that relevant now. The Warriors don't have a recent top-10 pick draft pick on their roster that could be a centerpiece of a trade for a quality player.

But what is still relevant is the fact that the Warriors have not traded multiple first-round picks in a single trade in over a decade.

Lacob said the Warriors made at least two offers this offseason that included multiple first-round picks. He added that sometimes the opposing team wants too much, and other times the opposing team chooses another team's package, even though it's about the same as the Warriors'.

What some Warriors fans want Lacob and Co. to do is act with more desperation because Curry's prime could end soon.

Lacob said he values the present and doesn't think it's acceptable to put a bad product on the floor, but he's also not guaranteeing that the Dubs make a big move at the trade deadline.

Lacob Can't Imagine Curry Going Anywhere Else

Lacob didn't get into details about what extension talks with Curry will look like when he's first eligible to sign one on August 29. But he made it clear he doesn't expect Curry to go anywhere else.

Kawakami also mentioned that general manager Mike Dunleavy Jr. brought up what would happen if Curry asked for a trade, and Lacob said any speculation about Curry being traded is unfounded.

Lacob said Curry is happy with the organization, happy with his life and rooted in the Bay Area. Lacob said there's never been a hint that Curry would want to leave.

Lacob Doesn't Know Why LeBron Chose 76ers Over Warriors

Lacob addressed the Warriors missing on LeBron James in free agency.

"He chose to go a different route, and I can't really tell you why because I don't really know why," Lacob said. "Congratulations to Bob Myers, I guess, who I think is great at his job and surprisingly, perhaps to some, convinced him to go there, or he decided."

James ended up signing with the 76ers for a two-year deal at the veteran minimum.

It's possible that it stings a bit more that former Warriors GM Bob Myers is part of the 76ers staff that landed James.
