Von Miller's arrest at Denver gun club compounds complicated offseason

On Sunday, Denver Broncos outside linebacker Von Miller was arrested at the Centennial Gun Club for failure to appear on a warrant. Arapahoe County undersheriff Dave Walcher told the Denver Post about the arrest, and the Post obtained records indicating that Miller posted a $1,000 bond in Arapahoe County court the same day. He failed to appear for a court hearing on a charge from last October when he was cited for careless driving, driving without a license and no proof of insurance, and the arrest warrant was issued in January.

“We have been aware of the matter involving Von Miller’s failure to appear in court for traffic violations,” the team said in a statement. “It was reported to the league earlier this week and is being handled through the legal system.”

Miller has already been in trouble with the league this summer -- on July 22, he was given a four-game suspension to start the 2013 season for a violation of the NFL’s substance abuse policies. According to reports, in 2011, Miller was put in the league’s substance abuse program after testing positive for marijuana, and he also tested positive for an undisclosed amphetamine that same year. Three positive tests can trigger a suspension.

In 2012, Miller ranked third in the NFL with 18.5 sacks, and he was the key player on Denver’s defense. With fellow pass-rusher Elvis Dumervil off to Baltimore following a contract snafu, the Broncos will need Miller to do just as much as he did last season, if not more -- and the window of opportunity would appear to be closing for him to do so.
