New England Patriots running back Jonas Gray did not practice Friday because he was late to practice, The Providence Journal's Mark Daniels reports.

Gray's absence comes the day after the Patriots signed running back LeGarrette Blount to a two-year contract. Blount previous played for New England in 2013 before joining the Pittsburgh Steelers this season. The Steelers released him earlier this week.

In Sunday's victory over the Indianapolis Colts, Gray had a breakout performance in only his fourth career NFL game. The 24-year-old ran for 201 yards and four scores on 37 carries, setting a franchise record for most touchdowns in a single regular season game. Prior to that, Gray had only 32 carries in three games with the Patriots.
