The San Francisco 49ers have hired Eric Mangini as their defensive coordinator, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter.

The team and Mangini reached agreement on a three-year contract, Schefter reported.

Mangini spent last season as the 49ers' tight ends coach and the previous season as their senior offensive consultant.

He has also had head coaching stints with the New York Jets and Cleveland Browns and served as a defensive assistant for the New England Patriots.

Earlier this month, Mangini was reportedly set to interview with the Oakland Raiders for their defensive coordinator position.

In San Francisco, Mangini will replace Vic Fangio, who was recently hired as the Chicago Bears' defensive coordinator.

This season the 49ers ranked fifth in the NFL in total defense and 10th in scoring defense.

San Francisco posted an 8-8 record and finished in third place in the NFC West.
