Colts release Gosder Cherilus

The Indianapolis Colts released offensive tackle Gosder Cherilus, the team announced Sunday.

Cherilus started 13 games last season for the Colts after starting every game the previous year. During the 2013 off-season, Cherilus signed a five-year deal worth $34.5 million with the Colts, a contract that made the former Detroit Lions first-round pick the highest-paid offensive tackle in the league.

Cherilus, who dealt with injury problems last season, underperformed during his two years in Indianapolis. Pro Football Focus ranked Cherilus 70th out of 84 eligible offensive tackles in 2014, according to NFL.com.

Cherilus, 31, is set to enter his eighth NFL season. With Cherilus no longer a member of the team, Jack Mewhort will likely enter training camp as the Colts' starter at right tackle.
