Savage placed on IR; 14 released as Texans get to 53

HOUSTON (AP) The Houston Texans placed third-string quarterback Tom Savage on injured reserve and released 14 players on the deadline to trim their roster to the NFL's 53-man limit.

Savage injured his shoulder in Houston's last preseason game on Thursday and coach Bill O'Brien says he'll miss a significant amount of time.

Houston released nose tackle Louis Nix, a third-round pick last season who struggled with injuries and conditioning as a rookie. Also let go on Saturday was fourth-year receiver Damaris Johnson, who started eight games for the Texans last season and finished with 31 catches for 331 yards and a touchdown.

Among other players released were cornerback Charles James, rookie running back Kenny Hilliard and linebacker Max Bullough, who appeared in one game for the Texans last season.
