Former New England Patriots running back Jonas Gray has joined the Miami Dolphins' practice squad, reports ESPN's Adam Schefter.

Gray previously spent time on Miami's practice squad in 2012 and was with the Dolphins during training camp in 2013. The Patriots released Gray on Saturday in an effort to finalize their 53-man roster.

The running back is a former undrafted free agent out of Notre Dame. Gray signed a future/reserve contract with the Patriots in January 2014 and was later moved to the team's practice squad. In October of that season, the Patriots signed Gray to their active roster.

In one season with the Patriots, Gray, 25, played eight games, rushed for 412 yards on 89 carries and had five touchdowns. In a game against the Colts in November, Gray rushed for four touchdowns, which was as many as the rest of the league combined that Sunday. He made history as the first player to do this since at least 1940 and appeared on that week's Sports Illustrated cover
