Backup quarterback Kyle Allen will start again on Sunday against the 49ers, Panthers coach Ron Rivera announced on Monday.

Allen has been starting for Carolina since Cam Newton re-aggravated his foot injury in Week 2 against the Buccaneers. Newton sustained a mild foot sprain in the preseason before suffering a Lisfranc injury to his left foot.

Rivera said Newton is continuing to rehab his foot injury but there is still no timetable for his return. He was reportedly expected to return to action in Week 8.

Allen, a second-year backup, has impressed in his four starts this season. He's unbeaten in those starts and the Panthers are 4–2 overall and in second place in the NFC South.

The Panthers are coming off a 37–26 win over the Buccaneers, where Allen went 20-for-32 with 227 yards and two touchdowns.

Carolina faces the 49ers in San Francisco this Sunday. Kickoff is slated for 4:05 p.m. ET.
