49ers Fielding Trade Calls for Trey Lance, per Report

The 49ers have been fielding calls from other teams regarding interest in trading for quarterback Trey Lance, according to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport. San Francisco is likely going with second-year quarterback Brock Purdy as the team’s future starter.

Lance was selected with the No. 3 pick in the 2021 NFL draft and started his career as Jimmy Garoppolo’s backup with the expectation that he’d take over as starter eventually. He did just that in 2022—for just two games. Lance suffered a season-ending ankle injury in Week 2 and it led to Garoppolo taking over under center despite the team openly looking to trade him.

Garoppolo would go on to suffer a foot injury in Week 13. Purdy filled in and won that game over the Dolphins, the first of six wins in a row to end the regular season. The 49ers won two games in the playoffs, but Purdy suffered an elbow injury in the NFC championship game and the team lost to the Eagles.

Per Rapoport, the 49ers are keen on making sure Purdy’s rehab goes smoothly with no trade for Lance imminent. Lance has appeared in just eight games over the last two seasons, starting four of them. In those games, he has tallied 797 passing yards, five touchdown passes and three interceptions with a 54.9% completion percentage.
