DeAndre Hopkins Could Wait Until August to Sign With Team, per Report

DeAndre Hopkins is meeting with the Patriots on Thursday, but that doesn’t mean he’s a slam dunk to sign with New England, or another team, anytime soon.

Hopkins is willing to wait until August before signing with a new team, according to ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler.

“I just got official word, DeAndre Hopkins is in New England, he’s meeting with the Patriots,” Fowler said on ESPN on Thursday morning, per On3. “He will meet with the coaches, Bill Belichick and the Patriots’ interest remains high. They made that clear with Hopkins’s representatives at the very beginning when he became a free agent. So we’ll see if they can close on this thing. I’m also told that Hopkins is not in a major rush. He’s looking at more training camp, even early August as more of a harder deadline for him to sign somewhere. So it’d have to be a very sweet offer for New England to make that happen today.”

New England is the second visit the former All-Pro has taken this week after meeting with Tennessee on Monday, where he left without a deal.

After spending his prime with Houston, Hopkins played 35 games for the Cardinals the last three seasons. While he is no longer one of the best receivers in the NFL, Hopkins is still a highly productive receiver, as demonstrated by the 221 receptions for 2,696 yards and 17 touchdowns he scored over the three years with Arizona.

The 31-year-old Hopkins was released by Arizona last month after the team struggled to find a trade partner for the wideout.
