Colin Kaepernick Reveals His Picks for Top Five QBs of All Time
Former 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick joined Sports Illustrated to discuss the best quarterbacks to ever play the position.
Spoiler alert: Kaepernick, the only player in NCAA Division I history to register more than 10,000 passing yards and 4,000 rushing yards in a career, did not include Pro Football Hall of Famers such as Peyton Manning, Dan Marino, Brett Favre, Drew Brees or Joe Montana among his top five. (Brees, Manning and Favre rank second, third and fourth all-time in NFL career passing yards only behind Tom Brady.)
Brady, a seven-time Super Bowl champion, topped Kaepernick’s list. The former 49ers signal-caller referred to Brady as the “undeniable GOAT.”
Up next was former dual-threat standout Randall Cunningham, whom Kaepernick said, “Broke the mold for quarterbacks thanks to doing everything on the ground, but also while airing it out.”
Warren Moon, who was the first African American quarterback and first undrafted quarterback to be inducted to the Pro Football Hall of Fame, slid in at No. 3. The longtime Houston Oilers star “broke barriers, coming into the NFL as a Black quarterback and putting up massive numbers,” Kaepernick said.
Next, Kaepernick named Chiefs star Patrick Mahomes, by virtue of “championships and MVPs under his belt.” Mahomes has won two Super Bowls and been named NFL MVP twice in just five seasons as a starter.
Rounding out Kaepernick’s list is current Jets quarterback Aaron Rodgers, a four-time NFL MVP.
“Obviously, one of the greats with what he’s done on the field,” Kaepernick said of Rodgers. “Also, personally I had some good battles with him, so I enjoyed that back and forth.”
