Rams Planning for QB Matthew Stafford to Be Out vs. Packers Sunday, per Report
As the Rams remain hopeful for positive news on Matthew Stafford, the latest update regarding the star quarterback’s injured thumb suggests he could be in line to miss Week 9.
The Rams are reportedly preparing for the possibility of ruling out Stafford, who suffered a UCL sprain on his throwing hand in Week 8, for Sunday’s road game against the Packers, according to multiple reports.
Stafford’s status has remained in question after the 35-year-old was considered a game-time decision despite missing all three practice sessions this week.
Given his condition, as of Saturday night Los Angeles is expected to start journeyman Brett Rypien unless Stafford “surprises everyone and wakes up feeling ready,” according to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport.

Additionally, while Stafford has made progress, it’s becoming increasingly unlikely he plays on Sunday as the Rams recognize it would be “highly challenging” for him to do so due to his ailment, per ESPN’s Adam Schefter.
With it looking likely Stafford will miss Week 9, it remains to be seen how L.A. ultimately handles his health. The club will have its bye in Week 10, which could open the door for a Week 11 return for Stafford against the Seahawks barring any setbacks.
For now, though, L.A. will set its sights on winning in Green Bay with an offense helmed by Rypien, a fourth-year player in his fourth-ever start, with rookie practice squad call-up Dresser Winn as the backup.
