Russell Wilson to Sign With Steelers on One-Year Deal
Denver Broncos quarterback Russell Wilson, who’s set to be released at the start of the new league year on March 13, intends to sign with the Pittsburgh Steelers.
The news, which was first reported by ESPN’s Adam Schefter, was confirmed shortly after in a post by Wilson himself on social media. The report states that Wilson will sign a “team-friendly” one-year deal.
Wilson reportedly met with Pittsburgh’s coaching staff and Steelers officials for over six hours on Friday, per Schefter.
The Steelers will pay Wilson $1.21 million, the league minimum, with the Broncos still contracted to pay him $37.79 million, according to Chris Tomasson of the Denver Gazette.
Wilson spent two seasons in Denver, playing in 30 games and posting an 11–19 record. He threw for 6,594 yards and 42 touchdowns with 19 interceptions. The Broncos will incur approximately $85 million in dead money against the salary cap for releasing the quarterback after two seasons. It’s the largest dead cap hit in NFL history.
