It's Super Bowl or bust for the 49ers in 2023. Hall of Famers Steve Young and Jerry Rice stoked the flame with that expectation.

In this story:

2023 has always been a Super Bowl or bust season for the San Francisco 49ers.

The team has been stacked for the last four years now and are always on the cusp of getting there or winning it. Forgoing the development of Trey Lance who they spent three first round picks on in favor of Brock Purdy only emphasizes that the standard is a Super Bowl or bust.

But now legends of the 49ers are starting to weigh in and cement that standard further. Hall of Famers Jerry Rice and Steve Young spoke to the San Francisco Chronicle in separate interviews at the celebrity golf tournament in South Lake Tahoe. Each of them emphasized that this has to be the year the 49ers finally win it with Rice having the most weighted thoughts on it.

“To win it all, that’s it,” said Rice. “We’ve got it on defense, we’ve got it on offense. There are no excuses, man. They should go into training camp thinking Super Bowl.

"That door is going to close at some point. That’s why the mindset should be, ‘We’re going to win it now.’ You don’t want to come out and say that, but you’ve got to have the confidence. We have all the pieces right now. I don’t want any more years just getting to the championship. I want to see them win the whole thing.”

I think it's safe to say that this response from Rice on the 2023 49ers practically encapsulates the thoughts and feelings from the fans. The message is plain and simple: IT IS TIME!

”We’ve had a window for four or five years now, where we have it all. Let’s go get it.” said Young.

Nothing will excuse the 49ers this season. Not even a starting quarterback missing because they apparently have three that they absolutely "love" and feel comfortable with. They have the depth, the star power, and the coaches to get back to the NFC Championship game. At that point, it is just about getting past it and sealing the deal.
