49ers are Attempting to Sign Lions Tight End Brock Wright

It looks like the 49ers have found their replacement, and possible upgrade, of Charlie Woerner in the form of Lions tight end Brock Wright.

One position that the San Francisco 49ers wanted to add to this offseason was tight end.

With Charlie Woerner departed for the Atlanta Falcons, it only made their desire to bring someone in stronger. Well, the 49ers have potentially achieved that desire. Detroit Lions tight end Brock Wright is signing a three-year, $12 million restricted free agent offer with the 49ers, per Dave Birkett of the Detroit Free Press.

Wright won't officially be signed to the team as the Lions have five days to match the deal. Or, they could decline it and allow him to join the 49ers. The Lions gave Wright an original-round tender, which is worth $2.9 million. However, since he was an undrafted free agent, the 49ers will not have to cough up any draft capital.

It is why they were able to guarantee wide receiver Jauan Jennings' return in 2024. Signing Wright is an intriguing one for the 49ers. He only started four games for the Lions last season while tallying 13 passes for 91 yards and two touchdowns. Wright's strength appears to be as a run blocker.

So, the 49ers basically have their Woerner replacement. The down side to Wright is that he is coming off a broken forearm that he suffered in the divisional playoff game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. That injury shouldn't be much of any concern by the time training camp arrives.

Adding Wright probably doesn't mean the 49ers are done adding at tight end. Not unless they actually view him as a viable receiver, which wasn't possible with Woerner. The 49ers could very well view Wright that way given the contract they are trying to sign him to.

He'll be an interesting player to watch when training camp comes around.
