SANTA CLARA -- Brock Purdy suffered a concussion Sunday during the 49ers' loss to the Vikings and currently is in the concussion protocol, according to head coach Kyle Shanahan. Which means there's a chance Purdy will miss Sunday's game against the Bengals and Sam Darnold will play instead.

Here's what Shanahan said Wednesday about Purdy's concussion.

SHANAHAN: "He started to get symptoms on the plane. We got all checked up yesterday, and now he's in the protocol."

Q: Does he have enough time to clear protocol to be available for the game on Sunday?

SHANAHAN: "He does have enough time. He just has to go through the process."

Q: Did he hurt himself on the quarterback sneaks?

SHANAHAN: "Possibly. We don't know for sure, because he didn't start getting symptoms until the plane. I'd probably guess that."

Q: Could you tell something was wrong with him during the game?

SHANAHAN: "No. I don't get to talk to him -- I'm calling plays. But after the game, he talked to you guys, so it was a surprise when I woke up on the plane."

Q: Was there anything on film you saw that would suggest he wasn't himself in retrospect?

SHANAHAN: "Not really."

Q: What's your level of confidence in Sam Darnold?

SHANAHAN: "I have as much confidence in Sam as I could have in someone that I haven't gone into a real game with. He was great in the offseason. He has been great here in these seven weeks so far. He's already ready to go. He's great in the meetings. He doesn't get many reps, as no backups do. But he does well on the scout team. We have mainly walk through today, so Brock's allowed to do some of the walk through. We have a couple periods that aren't, so Sam will get those periods."
