SANTA CLARA -- This is the live blog for the San Francisco 49ers' Week 3 Thursday night game against the New York Giants. This will be updated frequently with information and analysis from the press box.

4:00 Here are the 49ers' inactives: Brandon Aiyuk, Ty Davis Price, Ambry Thomas, Kalia Davis, Jalen Graham, Nick Zakelj and Brandon Allen.

4:02 This game is all about the 49ers defense stopping a mobile quarterback. Every time the 49ers lost last season, they lost to a mobile quarterback -- Justin Fields, Russell Wilson, Marcus Mariota, Patrick Mahomes and Jalen Hurts. That's because the 49ers use a wide-9 defensive front that is effective against pocket passers but vulnerable against running quarterbacks because it creates huge scramble lanes. Quarterbacks who can get outside the pocket and either scramble for first downs or push the ball downfield for big plays tend to have success against the 49ers, and that's the kind of quarterback Daniel Jones is. He's not like Matthew Stafford, who stood in one place last week and attempted to beat the 49ers from the pocket with dinks and dunks. Never works. Jones will hold the ball longer and hunt for big plays outside the pocket, which is the best way to attack the 49ers. And they know it's coming. They've all year to prepare for this challenge. Are they ready? Or will mobile quarterbacks be the 49ers' Achilles heel forever? Keep in mind, the 49ers are 4-18 all time against Russell Wilson. Historically, he represents the kind of quarterback who gives the 49ers the most problems.

5:13 The Giants win the toss and defer. The 49ers will receive the opening kickoff.

FIRST QUARTER

5:26 On 3rd and goal from the 10, Brock Purdy takes a hit while he throws to Deebo Samuel in the back left corner of the end zone and nearly gets intercepted. That was the second near interception Purdy threw on that drive. He also got sacked once. Fortunately for the 49ers, Christian McCaffrey gained 29 yards and Jauan Jennings gained 24.

5:27 Jake Moody makes a 28-yard field goal.

49ers 3, Giants 0.

5:36 On 3rd and 8 from the 49ers 28, Daniel Jones throws a pathetic two-yard pass to Parris Campbell, and the Giants kick a 44-yard field goal to tie the game. Their biggest play came when Kerry Hyder overran Jones, who scrambled out of the pocket and hit his running back for a gain of 18.

49ers 3, Giants 3.

5:43 On 3rd and 8 from the 49ers 44, Purdy throws a short pass to Jauan Jennings who gains just six yards, and the 49ers punt. The Giants take over at their 10. This is Purdy's first game without Brandon Aiyuk, and so far he's 5 for 11 for 67 yards and his passer rating is 65.3.

SECOND QUARTER

5:51 On the first play of the drive, the Giants try to block Nick Bosa with second-string tight end Daniel Bellinger, who whiffs of course, and Bosa sacks Daniel Jones for an eight-yard loss. Then the Giants go three and out. After the punt, the 49ers take over at their 28.

6:03 On 3rd and 5 from the Giants 9, Brock Purdy throws a beautiful touchdown pass off his back foot to Ronnie Bell. That's his first NFL catch. He's good. And Purdy is the biggest bargain in professional sports.

49ers 10, Giants 3.

6:10 On 3rd and 2 from the Giants 33, Javon Hargrave destroys the Giants backup left guard and sacks Daniel Jones, and the Giants go 3 and out. After the punt, the 49ers take over at their 27.

6:26 On 1st and goal from the 4, Brock Purdy hands off to McCaffrey, who sprints forward for an easy touchdown. On the previous play, Purdy took a big hit and drew a roughing-the-passer penalty when Leonard Williams landed on top of him. Purdy also threw a pass during this drive that got tipped by Deebo Samuel and caught by Ronnie Bell. Sometimes it's better to be lucky than good.

49ers 17, Giants 3.

6:35 Graham Gano makes a 57-yard field goal with 13 seconds left in the first half.

49ers 17, Giants 6.

6:36 Purdy takes a knee.

THIRD QUARTER

6:57 On 3rd and 7 from the Giants 43, Daniel Jones scrambles to his right and throws the ball out of bounds, then they punt. After the punt, the 49ers will start from their 4.

7:02 On 3rd and 8 from the 49ers 6, Jauan Jennings drops a pass near the left sideline, and the 49ers go three and out. You'd think a Super Bowl contender would blow out a team like the freaking Giants, but the 49ers are letting them hang around.

7:04 During the punt, the 49ers are flagged for a 15-yard fair-catch-interference penalty. So the Giants will start at the 49ers 36. Extremely sloppy performance by the 49ers so far.

7:09 On 2nd and 3 from the 49ers 30, Deommodore Lenoir commits a 22-yard pass interference penalty. On the next play, Matt Breida runs into the end zone from 8 yards out. Then the Giants go for 2, and Jones gets sacked by Nick Bosa and Arik Armstead.

49ers 17, Giants 12.

7:22 On 1st and goal from the 7, McCaffrey powers the ball to the 3. Then Shanahan calls back to back passes and Purdy throws both away under heavy pressure. Strange calls. Then Moody makes a 21-yard field goal.

49ers 20, Giants 12.

7:30 On 3rd and 9 from the Giants 20, Jones throws a prayer downfield to Darren Waller, but the pass falls incomplete. The Giants are just terrible. After the punt, the 49er take over at their 31.

FOURTH QUARTER

7:46 On 3rd and 17 from the Giants 25, Purdy completes a 7-yard pass to George Kittle, then on the next play Jake Moody makes a 36-yard field goal.

49ers 23, Giants 12.

7:52 On 3rd and 11 from the Giants 24, Daniel Jones throws a high pass that bounces off the hands of tight end Darren Waller, and the Giants go 3 and out. This game should have been over long ago but the 49ers have let the Giants hang around. Still, the 49ers should win by 18.

8:04 As I was saying. On 2nd and 7 from the Giants 27, Purdy throws a perfect touchdown pass to Deebo Samuel running a fade to the right side. And now the 49ers are up by 18.

49ers 30, Giants 12.
