Analyzing Day 12 of the 2023 49ers QB Competition

In this story:
Henderson, NV -- Here's what Brock Purdy, Trey Lance, Sam Darnold and Brandon Allen did on Day 12 of 49ers training camp.
BROCK PURDY
Had a typical Brock Purdy practice -- 9 of 16 with two touchdowns in the red zone and an interception to a linebacker near midfield. Which means Purdy was okay, but not nearly good enough for a team that's supposed to win the Super Bowl this season. And he was facing the Raiders suspect defense. Twice he had opportunities to lead touchdown drives against that defense and failed. As opposed to Jimmy Garoppolo, who led one impressive touchdown drive against the 49ers' vaunted defense. Which means Garoppolo was better than Purdy today. Not great news for the 49ers.
TREY LANCE
Completed 6 of 12 pass attempts and fumbled two snaps. The first fumbled snap was Lance's first play of practice. The next play was a false start. After that, Kyle Shanahan immediately benched Lance and replaced him with Sam Darnold, who's terrible (more on him in a minute). Lance spent the rest of the morning working with the third-stringers, which is a slap in his face. Still, he led a long drive at the end of practice and should have finished it with a pretty touchdown pass to Cameron Latu, but Latu dropped it, which is what he usually does when someone throws him the ball.
SAM DARNOLD
Completed 1 of 3 pass attempts during 11 on 11 team drills. Also scrambled a couple times and looked completely confused in the pocket. Darnold is decent if his first read is open. But if he's covered, Darnold will just stare at him and hope that he'll get open. After a few seconds of cheering on his first read, Darnold will panic and frantically try to find his second read. That's why he's awful.
BRANDON ALLEN
Didn't get to practice during 11 on 11s. I'm outraged.
