The 49ers Sign Jason Verrett to the Practice Squad

In this story:
Here's an intriguing move.
On the same day that No. 1 cornerback Charvarius Ward pulled his groin during the 49ers' win over Seattle, they also signed former No. 1 cornerback Jason Verrett to the practice squad. Which means he might never play for the 49ers this season, but he's there if they need him. And they might need him soon if more cornerbacks get injured.
Verrett, 32, hasn't played a snap in an NFL game since he tore his ACL in the 2021 season opener with the 49ers. In 2022, he re-signed with the 49ers but tore his Achilles tendon in practice and missed the entire season. This year, he signed with the Texans practice squad, but they released him on Nov. 15. His career seems to be coming to an end.
But first, he'll have the opportunity to get a Super Bowl ring with the 49ers. Even if he doesn't play, he can get a ring if the 49ers win the Lombardi Trophy. And he would deserve a ring, because he was great for the 49ers before his injuries. He still would start for them if he hadn't gotten hurt.
Verrett most likely will never play again. But if Ward misses significant time with a groin injury, and the 49ers young cornerbacks struggle in the playoffs, Verrett gives the 49ers' a veteran option they can trust if he's healthy enough to play. They'll have a month to determine how ready he truly is and if they even need him on the field, or if his presence in the locker room is enough.
Welcome back, Jason.
