Upcoming Events on the 49ers Calendar

In this story:
The 49ers' offseason hasn't officially started yet, but things will kick off soon. Here's what you have to look forward to.
February 22: Brock Purdy's elbow surgery
In just four days, Purdy will have surgery to repair the torn UCL in his throwing elbow. The 49ers anticipate a six-month recovery, but the surgeon will decide during the surgery whether Purdy will need a procedure that will come with a nine-month recovery. So in four days, we should learn whether Purdy will be ready to start Week 1 or midseason.
February 28 - March 6: The NFL Scouting Combine
This is a yearly event that takes place in Indianapolis. This year, the 49ers have no draft picks in the top 98, but they do have 10 picks after that, which means the 49ers will be quite active at the Combine.
March 7: The franchise tag deadline
This is the final day the 49ers can place the franchise tag or transition tag on a player. The 49ers are not expected to exercise this option, but you never know.
March 13-15: The legal tampering period
Teams can begin negotiating contracts with impending free agents. And while nothing can be finalized during this two-day period, lots of contracts will be agreed upon in principle, which means lots of news will break.
March 15: The new league year begins
This is when new free-agent contracts become official.
April 17: OTAs begin
This is when players report to the facility for strength and endurance training. Media will not be invited to these sessions. The first practices will occur after the draft.
April 27-29: The draft
The 49ers currently have no picks in Rounds 1 or 2, but they do own picks 99, 100 and 101, as well as seven picks after that, which means they could trade up if they want to.
May 1: Fifth-year option deadline
The 49ers will have to decide if they will pick up the fifth-year option of former first-round picks Javon Kinlaw and Brandon Aiyuk. Right now, it seems like the 49ers will pick up Aiyuk's option but not Kinlaw's.
May 5-8: Rookie minicamp
The 49ers' new draft picks and undrafted free agents will practice for the first time with the team in Santa Clara.
The 49ers' official dates for OTAs, minicamp and training camp have not yet been determined. I'll update this article when those dates are released.

Grant Cohn has covered the San Francisco 49ers daily since 2011. He spent the first nine years of his career with the Santa Rosa Press Democrat where he wrote the Inside the 49ers blog and covered famous coaches and athletes such as Jim Harbaugh, Colin Kaepernick and Patrick Willis. In 2012, Inside the 49ers won Sports Blog of the Year from the Peninsula Press Club. In 2020, Cohn joined FanNation and began writing All49ers. In addition, he created a YouTube channel which has become the go-to place on YouTube to consume 49ers content. Cohn's channel typically generates roughly 3.5 million viewers per month, while the 49ers' official YouTube channel generates roughly 1.5 million viewers per month. Cohn live streams almost every day and posts videos hourly during the football season. Cohn is committed to asking the questions that 49ers fans want answered, and providing the most honest and interactive coverage in the country. His loyalty is to the reader and the viewer, not the team or any player or coach. Cohn is a new-age multimedia journalist with an old-school mentality, because his father is Lowell Cohn, the legendary sports columnist for the San Francisco Chronicle from 1979 to 1993. The two have a live podcast every Tuesday. Grant Cohn grew up in Oakland and studied English Literature at UCLA from 2006 to 2010. He currently lives in Oakland with his wife.
