Why Kyle Shanahan Should Go to the Combine

In this story:

Kyle Shanahan acts like he invented modern football and anything he does is the right thing to do.

I admire his unwavering confidence, but he seems to lack some self awareness. Because he hasn't proven that his way leads to winning a Championship. All he has proven is that his way leads to losing multiple Championships after leading by double digits.

You'd think a man with his resume would have some humility and look to replicate what other successful coaches do. Afterall, the NFL is a copycat league. All good coaches steal from the great ones. There's no shame in that.

So when Andy Reid, the best coach in the NFL, goes to the NFL Scouting Combine, you'd think Shanahan would, too. It's never a good look to get outworked by a 65-year-old head coach who just won a Super Bowl. Plus the Chiefs have drafted so well the past couple years and the 49ers haven't.

Since 2022, the Chiefs have drafted Trent McDuffie, George Karlaftis, Isiah Pacheco and Rashee Rice. Meanwhile, in the same time the 49ers have drafted Brock Purdy, Ji'Ayir Brown and a bunch of scrubs.

I'm not saying the 49ers definitely would draft better if Shanahan went to the Combine. But until they start hitting again, he should be there. Because he clearly has input on who the 49ers draft. And if he's going to advocate for the team to reach horribly for a stiff in Round 3 such as tight end Cam Latu, then he should get off his butt, go to Indianapolis and watch these players work out in person.

Just a thought.
