Bengals Leaky Run Defense Set For Huge Seattle Test: 'We'd Rather Geno Smith Throw The Ball'

In this story:
CINCINNATI — The Bengals get a much tougher test in one of the best offenses in the NFL this weekend. Seattle owns the seventh-best attack in the NFL by total EPA/play and boasts the second-best rushing attack by that metric.
Linebacker Logan Wilson knows the Bengals need to stop running back Kenneth Walker and co.
"They're very efficient at both points of attack," Wilson said. "I think that that presents a different challenge for us I think that they try to expose some things that you might have struggled with in the past and so we got to know how to correct those things and not let them become plays that beat you twice where that's our mindset you can't let one play beat you twice and so just learning from what we've done in the past trying to fix those things. And then just going forward understanding that they are a good physical football team that starts up front for them and their quarterbacks very efficient and their running backs are really good."
It's a brutal matchup on paper for a Cincinnati defense allowing 154 rush yards per game, 31st in the NFL.
This run defense has been a disaster that needs to turn around quickly for Cincinnati to keep pace in the AFC. The underlying metrics paint a slightly better picture (42.4% success rate allowed, 20th in NFL), as Cincinnati allowed some big runs due to sloppy tackling that's normally been solid under defensive coordinator Lou Anarumo.
"We have to get started stopping the running backs from getting over 100 yards," Germaine Pratt declared. "So that's the one thing that we have to do. We have to tackle Well. Much better than we been doing in previous weeks. We got to do our job. You stop the run and eliminate the run game, then Geno (Smith) has to throw the ball. And we'd rather Geno throw the ball."
