Bills Trade WR Gabe Davis For Bucs' Mike Evans? Latest Wild Rumor

The latest rumor trade proposal has the Buffalo Bills trading receiver Gabe Davis to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers for receiver Mike Evans.

Is Gabe Davis a one-hit wonder? If so, should the Buffalo Bills consider trading him?

These are the types of questions pondered by media - and likely team executives - as the NFL Draft nears.

Davis, of course, set an irrationally high bar for himself last season after setting an NFL record with four touchdown catches in the 2021 playoff loss to the Kansas City Chiefs. He was good a year ago, with 48 catches for 836 yards and seven scores. But ... good enough to be Buffalo's No. 2 receiver behind Stefon Diggs?

Davis' standing has Sports Illustrated considering whether a trade might be in order.

The proposal: Davis and a sixth-round draft choice to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in exchange for Mike Evans and a fifth-rounder.

SI's reasoning is that the deal would give the Bucs much-needed salary-cap relief and upgrade the Bills' No. 2 receiver.

"The Buccaneers do not appear eager to part with their top wide receiver,“ SI admits. "Though Evans is consistently finding himself in hypothetical trades, it sounds like the Buccaneers are looking keep him and fellow star Chris Godwin in pewter and red for the foreseeable future.”

For what it's worth, Bucs coach Todd Bowles recently said publicly that he doesn't see either of his receivers "going anywhere."

Likewise, Bills general manager Brandon Beane - and teammate Cole Beasley - gave Davis a vote of confidence.

“I think Gabe did some good things,” Beane told the Buffalo News. “I know people focus on some drops that he had, but Gabe is still a young player and still made a lot of plays for us.”

The Bills have already made a pair of moves to bolster their wide receiving corps this offseason, signing speedy receiver and return specialist Deonte Harty and former Miami Dolphins pass catcher Trent Sherfield.

And NFL.com projects in its latest mock draft that Buffalo will use its first-round pick on USC receiver Jordan Addison.
