NFL QB Rankings 1-To-32: Where Does Bills' Josh Allen Fit?

Is this a fair ranking for Buffalo Bills quarterback Josh Allen?

A year ago, the floor for Buffalo Bills quarterback Josh Allen on most quarterback rankings was No. 2. And if you had Allen leapfrog Patrick Mahomes of the Kansas City Chiefs for the No. 1 spot, it wasn't outlandish.

But Mahomes -- who added a second league MVP, Super Bowl title and Super Bowl MVP to his résumé- has since reclaimed his spot as the undisputed top quarterback in the league. And on our SI/FanNation rankings of the top 32 starting quarterbacks for the 2023 season, Allen slipped to No. 3:

Allen has a chance to go down as the most physically-gifted quarterback in NFL history. He's 6-5, 237 pounds and is capable of both running by you or over you, perhaps to a fault. He's also got one of the strongest arms that the sport has ever seen. In his second year under offensive coordinator Ken Dorsey, Allen needs to limit his turnovers.

Perhaps the Bills can aid him in that quest by finally being able to turn to someone other than Allen to be their leading rusher in crucial games.

You can probably deduce that Joe Burrow of the Cincinnati Bengals has jumped a spot above Allen to No. 2, though we would add it was a difficult decision. One of the tiebreakers is that Burrow has better skill-position talent with running back Joe Mixon and wide receivers Ja'Marr Chase, Tee Higgins and Tyler Boyd.

Allen has Stefon Diggs at his disposal -- assuming everything is ironed out with the All-Pro wideout -- but they lack a consistent second star pass catcher. Perhaps rookie tight end Dalton Kincaid will help to close that gap, but that doesn't change the fact that Buffalo hasn't had a bellcow running back to take pressure off of Allen for half a decade now.

Still, Allen comes in above the likes of Justin Herbert of the Los Angeles Chargers, Jalen Hurts of the Philadelphia Eagles, Lamar Jackson of the Baltimore Ravens and Aaron Rodgers of the New York Jets. He's also the top-ranked quarterback in the AFC East, topping Rodgers, Tua Tagovailoa of the Miami Dolphins (No. 12) and Mac Jones (No. 24).
