Bills Host Tulane RB Tyjae Spears for Lunch, Private Workout

The Buffalo Bills seem all but set at running back for next season after recently signing former New England Patriots ball-carrier Damien Harris, but aren't shying away from potentially adding depth in the 2023 NFL Draft.

The Buffalo Bills have been busy making some key signings in free agency recently after a somewhat quiet start to the new league year.

But the 24/7/365 draft preparation hardly ever comes to a halt, and the Bills are staying busy with the 2023 NFL Draft in Kansas City about a month away.

The Bills seem all but set at running back for next season after recently signing former New England Patriots ball-carrier Damien Harris, but aren't shying away from potentially adding depth. Per reports from The Draft Network, Buffalo and running backs coach Kelly Skipper hosted former Tulane running back Tyjae Spears for lunch and a private workout on Thursday.

"Busy day for the Buffalo Bills and Tulane RB Tyjae Spears," the report said. "The two sides met, had lunch, and went through a private workout this afternoon with RB coach Kelly Skipper, per source."

While Spears would likely serve as a depth piece should he land in a pass-happy offense like Buffalo's, the running back position in the NFL is always unpredictable and an opportunity could arise at any time.

Spears, who spent four seasons with the Green Wave, didn't experience his breakout campaign until 2022. After totaling 198 carries and 1,329 rushing yards combined in his first three years, Spears burst onto the scene this past season for 229 caries for 1,581 rushing yards and an impressive 19 touchdowns. He also added 22 catches for 256 yards and two more scores.

But while his entire 2022 season was impressive, it was his final game of the year that certainly commanded the attention of scouts from around the league.

In a thrilling 46-45 win over the USC Trojans in the Cotton Bowl on Jan. 2, Spears dominated with 17 carries for 205 yards and four touchdowns. He averaged a whopping 12.1 yards per carry and accounted for almost half of Tulane's total offensive yardage. Three of his touchdowns came in the second half, including a late score in the final minutes that help the Green Wave come back after trailing 45-30 with a little over four minutes to play.

Even at 5-10, 195 pounds, Spears could end up being one of the best running backs in the draft, and the Bills clearly see the potential.
