In this story:

Today was the first day of joint practices between the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and the New York Jets, and to say that things got heated in practice is a bit of an understatement.

Multiple fights occurred during practice today between the two teams, with defensive lineman A'Shawn Robinson being involved in one, per Jeff Dubrof, and offensive guard Luke Goedeke being involved in two, per Ralph Vacchiano.

Luke Goedeke Wasn't Having it

The first fight that Goedeke was involved in included rookie pass rusher David Bailey, who wanted to go against Goedeke in one-on-one drills, which then resulted in said fight. This is what Goedeke had to say on the incident, per Pewter Report:

︀︀“Well, [David Bailey] called me out in one-on-ones and wanted to go against me and lost, and then tried shoving me after that, and 52 [Kingsley Enagbare], I believe, came from the side and just cheapshotted me."

The Bucs were already dealing with some pushing and shoving matches occurring in their own training camp practices before making the jump to New Jersey to practice with the Jets. This is usually the time of year when teams get very antsy and are typically ready for live game reps and the regular season.

It is also important to remember that these two teams do have a bit of recent history. They played each other in a close matchup last season, where the Bucs would win 29-27. The Jets, however, came very close to winning said matchup on a blocked field goal that gave them the lead late. Jets head coach Aaron Glenn would then be seen dancing down the sidelines as the Jets took the lead over the Bucs.

The Change in the Culture

Also, the Bucs have spent a good amount of effort this off-season improving their mentality and grit when it comes to the roster. Players like A'Shawn Robinson were added to players like Luke Goedeke to give the team more of an edge and to help change some of the more laid-back attitude the team had in the past couple of seasons.

Overall, fights during practices are not ideal, but not surprising. Football is a very physical sport, and these things happen all the time. The Bucs and Jets face off on August 14th in the Bucs' first preseason matchup and should have another joint practice on the schedule soon. We'll see if more fighting occurs.
