Cardinals Won't Name Starting QB Before Week 1

Arizona Cardinals HC Jonathan Gannon told reporters today they won't name a starting quarterback before their season opener.

The Arizona Cardinals made a handful of roster moves on Monday at the quarterback position, which somehow gave clarity moving forward while also leaving the door open for more questions.

The Cardinals are reportedly leaving Kyler Murray on the PUP list to begin the season - leaving Arizona without their franchise quarterback for a minimum of four games.

The Cardinals also released Colt McCoy, who was considered to be in the mix for starting duties when the Cardinals travel to take on the Washington Commanders in Week 1.

After trading for quarterback Josh Dobbs late last week, the Cardinals will see either Dobbs or fifth-round rookie quarterback Clayton Tune get the nod.

When speaking with reporters today, Jonathan Gannon said he wouldn't name a starter ahead of their opener.

"I'm not gonna name a starter because I think it's a competitive advantage for us going to Washington, but we'll know who the starter is," Gannon said.

"I think we got a plan in place, but I want to see them both play football still. This week we've got some work and then the following week we got some work, but I feel good with where we're at."

The Commanders recently named Sam Howell their starting quarterback ahead of Arizona's visit to FedEx Field.

While Tune flashed solid athleticism and mobility during his three preseason games, Dobbs has the upper-hand when it comes to knowledge of the playbook thanks to familiarity with offensive coordinator Drew Petzing back during their time with the Cleveland Browns.

Gannon said they've had their eyes on Dobbs for a few months.

"Monti [Ossenfort] and I aren't going to bring anyone in here that the character doesn't check out first. He is extremely intelligent, character's through the roof," Gannon said of Dobbs.

"He's actually a guy that we looked at signing in the offseason. We kind of did a lot of work on him back then. When it became available - the transaction became available - we decided to make the move."

The Cardinals will have roughly two weeks of preparation before they take on the Commanders on Sunday, Sept. 10.
