Chargers News: Brandon Staley Surprisingly Self-Aware After Lions Defeat

LA's lead man was hard on himself after Sunday's defeat

After a tough 41-38 loss to the Detroit Lions on Sunday night, the Los Angeles Chargers find themselves below .500 once again. Despite scoring an impressive 38 points, it marked the second time this season where the Chargers surpassed a score of 30 points and still ended up on the losing side.

In this game, the offense wasn't the culprit; instead, the spotlight fell on the Brandon Staley-led defense, which struggled to contain the Lions' offense.

Following the loss, Staley, "the defensive mastermind," took full responsibility for the loss.

“I didn’t do a good enough job for us today,” Staley said.

The Chargers and close games seem to go hand in hand. This is the sixth game of the season decided by one possession, and LA has a 2-4 record in such scenarios. This recurring theme highlights a crucial difference between good and bad teams in the NFL—good teams find ways to win, while bad ones find ways to lose.

While Staley expressed accountability for the loss, he was still proud of how his guys fought against one of the best in the league.

“I know the group that I’ve been coaching for nine games, and it is good enough to beat anybody we play,” Staley said of this team. “We’ve played the very best teams in the NFL, and we’ve been in every single football game.”

It's nice to see they are in these games, but at the same time, LA needs to come out on top as well, and more times than not, they are not.

With a 4-5 record through nine games and eight crucial matchups remaining, Fox Sports indicates a 40% chance for the Chargers to make the playoffs with +150 odds.

The team is still within striking distance, and their ability to capitalize on opportunities will be pivotal in determining whether they'll play in January or go to Cancun.
