Chargers News: Justin Herbert Earns Respect from Dolphins Defensive Coordinator

This is high praise coming from Fangio...

One of the biggest reasons why the Los Angeles Chargers are seen as a trendy pick to make some noise in the AFC this season is star quarterback Justin Herbert. He gives this team a chance to win each time out on the field, and it’s a special feeling for any team to have that.

The Chargers should do some damage as long as he can stay healthy. Herbert continues to grow each season, and it has been impressive to watch play out.

Prior to the Chargers season-opening game against the Miami Dolphins this weekend, Dolphins defensive coordinator Vic Fangio had some high praise for the Chargers signal-caller. He touted him as a complete quarterback and one that Fangio has his defense trying to scheme against.

“The guy’s just highly talented,” Fangio said. “Obviously, he’s got great size, got a big arm but yet he throws the ball with touch, throws a very catchable ball. Can throw it anywhere on the field — short, intermediate and deep and real deep. Very elusive. He’s a good scrambler. He pulls it down and runs. He’s fast. He’s a complete quarterback.”

Fangio is one of the better defensive minds in the NFL today, so these are strong words coming from him. He has been in the league for a long time now, so he has seen many quarterbacks go through it.

Herbert is going to test the Dolphins defense out from the opening play of the game. His ability to sling the ball all across the field allows him to always force the defense to be alert. But it’s his decision-making that has gotten better with more experience.

He now has learned how to read the defenses much better. Herbert can scan the field and look at his reads before throwing the ball. It is what has made him one of the better quarterbacks in the league and why the Chargers paid him a lot of money this summer.

The hope is that the Bolts can come away with the win on Sunday over Miami. Herbert playing well in the game would just be an added bonus.
